Graduand to Graduate

I am finally here. The title of this blog is finally relevant.

On July 20, 2017, I graduated from the Queensland University of Technology with a Bachelor of Creative Industries with Distinction.

Amanda Webster, QUT graduate.

I am so proud of myself, especially for graduating with Distinction; that was a nice surprise when I found out. I am now one step closer to – excuse the blatant rip off – publishing a graduate’s education.

Since late last year, I have afforded myself the luxury of applying for careers that I am now qualified for, instead of jobs that will just earn me money. Although I have secured several interviews, which I believe went quite well, I have yet to secure a position. I have received feedback from a few of my interviewers, and the general consensus is that while my academic achievements are impressive, I have yet to gain the required experience they are looking for.

This is a relief as well as an annoyance. A relief because I am now positive that my resume is attractive and strong, and an annoyance because I know I do not have the experience, which is why I am applying for positions to obtain experience, even though a requirement of a graduate role is “two years’ experience”. Not joking on that one: I found a job advertisement not too long ago that stipulated they were looking for a junior/graduate with two years of experience. What? How? When I finally work out how to gain two years of experience in an industry before I am qualified to work in that industry, while simultaneously studying full-time to become qualified in that industry, I am sure I will write a book and earn a lot of money.

Until then, I will fall back to the quip of being in the limbo between graduating and finding a job whenever anyone inquires about my work/study/life situation.
